My Anti(que) Chrismas

I was doubtful but today its confirmed; my grandfather was Protestant Christian. All these years we never really thought much about it, and my dad never once mentioned it to us either. My father had passed on more than 27 years ago and also because we all were very devout Hindus (Saivaites) from birth. It was taboo and utterly blasphemous to ask mother. So, I thought that I will never get an answer. But today my cousin Sham cleared my doubt. Thanks Sham.

My dad was cool, he never made a fuss about religion like my mother. He ate and drank at every occasion and heck, he didn't even care who we got married too. He always wanted me to be attentive at whatever I did and always keep the family close. I hope I am that, but what really intrigues me is the sacrifices my forefathers had to make to provide for me. The troubles they had to bare and the fight to keep the generations going. Considering M. Appiah had to leave his home in Arali, Jaffna and come to Malaya in the early nineteen hundreds. This was at the peak of the British Empire and in the middle of the Industrial Age.

He was English educated in Jaffna, then posted to the Malayan Railways and had a tumultuous career indeed. My father was the seventh of a family of thirteen and definitely not very pleased when describing his father. He mentioned that the racing horses in the turf club was more important than having food on the table. He had a tough life growing up because with all good English education came the gambling and alcoholism. There was no food or even room to sleep in the house. The family was large. The boys had to chip in and make ends meet and it was my grandmother that really kept the family together.

I know that we can be quick to judge, in-hind sight I have to say that I have much respect for M. Appiah. At that time, when Christians were on a crusade, with the vile intent of conversion plans and blasphemous teaching to denigrate Hinduism and to claim dominion over all wealth and education. How else can a man redeem his soul. Today, the truth about the concerted effort by many English Churches to collude and convert the Hindu is innumerable over 200 years of colonial rule. Case in point, Rev G.U. Pope translated the "Thiruvasagam" that was written by Saint Manikavagam in 1893, to understand the ethos of the Tamil people solely for the purpose of conversion. Translating was no easy task even for a native Tamil speaker. This effort was so malicious. The fervor to convert and to save so called the heathens was deplorable. The missionaries conducted it in such strict fashion, I am ashamed, and disgusted with the entire English systems and what it has to offer. I cant accept their reparation or any form of apology. Its too late. I can't imagine how tough it would have been for M Appiah.

He had to replace his mother tongue for a gravely shallow collection of alphabets, hardly much structure and in a language claiming pride in it's unstructuredness. Be ridiculed for not accepting Christ as the only God, all this tearing away at his values for the sake of getting ahead for his family. All our basic Hindu values were stripped away systematically; like having age limits for marriage and working in traditional farming and agrarian family businesses, slaughtering of Cows in public areas, destroying the ancient medicinal systems, replacing the land ownership from farmers to feudals ("JAMINDARS"). The most insulting, burning of the Hindu alter by the Protestants.

Today, I celebrate Xmas with a new fervor.  For defeating the Christians after 2000 years for surviving their harsh and degenerating treatment of the past. I celebrate this Xmas as a mark of success to all Hindus and Appiah's alike, who have managed to keep their faith and continue to practice to this day and keep their heads high. I would like to call this My Anti(que) Xmas for I have now found new meaning that leads me to appreciate my forefathers. It is my will and hope that the future generations know and appreciate the past and learn that every generation did their best. We are not here to judge or be judged. But we are here thanks to them. Merry Xmas my Tata (M. Appiah).

The Wanna Be Entrepreneurs

It got me thinking about how a new breed of entrepreneurs have emerged feeding off the real entrepreneurs. The market is now flooded with wanna be Venture Caps that have capitalized on startups seeking funds. Venture Caps are merely opportunist taking advantage of the real entrepreneur. Having been in the startup industry for awhile myself, it is an unhealthy trend that would probably destroy the spirit of the real entrepreneur.

Who is the real entrepreneur; when the realization of a service or product, has the possibility to make life a little better or cheaper or efficient, therein lies a business proposition to create a sustainable venture. Taking one step at a time, the entrepreneur builds a team and raises funds to realise the business potential. In doing so, the entrepreneur is challenged with several problems. The team cost money and without a team there is no service or product. The product better have a value to the customer. The value has to be very apparent to the customer so that there is a will to pay for the product or service. This value has to be converted to a monetary gain that is able to reap a profit (hopefully within 3 years). Based on this intent, entrepreneurs begin their day to search for either funds or the dream team.

It's very imperative that money is required to make money. In today’s world the promise of starting a business with no money and then seeking funds from investors has become a possibility. However since VC’s have jump the bandwagon, this industry is now driven by greed beyond the point of any rational comprehension. Let’s take 2 companies for example that started almost 20 years apart. The trends have changed, the valuations have gone wild and cost of running startups has gone through the roof. I am referring to Google Inc. 20 years ago and Uber Inc. today.

Google started as a search engine service provider for Yahoo. This meant a lot, Google gained the recognition and respect because it rode on the success of already existing giant on the internet “Yahoo”.  When Google went out on its own, everyone knew Google. But in the case of Uber, it's burning a billion dollars of investor money every year. Venture caps have decided to fund Uber because of the potential market cap of 50 billion dollars. Yes, Uber is the operator of the largest fleet of taxis in the world but Uber is not used by any Taxi conglomerates anywhere in the world. Except for, The London Taxi which was bought out by Uber but all other countries have not adopted Uber as their standard.

The stark difference in my view is; Google took the right approach and gained confidence of the end user to trust their search engine. Uber on the other hand is taking the harder approach to confront Taxi providers all over the world. The risk here is that the entire business is depended on converting regular people into Uber drivers. Uber does not cater for Taxi drivers to be Uber drivers. Uber is cutting out the middle party. Although this utopian idea may seem ideal, mainly because of the venture caps have come in and strong holding Uber to take this path. To proof my point further, Uber has been investing in self-driving Taxis, this proves that their direction is to ultimate cut out the driver and transfer the jobs to urban drivers. All over the world, Uber is the case and example of a successful Venture Capital investment. These VC’s are so big that they tend to say whatever statements it takes to save their own investments. It has become a parody of bad jokes that VCs all over the world are propagating.

The mantra that these Venture caps preach, is to have an unlimited market potential with a minimal viable product (MVP). Point in case is Uber. The backers of Uber believe that there are enough new drivers out there to sustain the Uber business forever. Uber to most part is a temporary solution for wages earners between jobs. They choose to drive for a short while before the land a secured position. However, the Uber service has to include existing Taxi drivers to be part of the Uber system at some point. This however, may take too long for the service to be a reliable to bring value to the customer’s customer (the Taxis Companies). This money cannot last for ever, the gestation period is taking long and it has taken too many dollars to get this far. Burning investor money will come at a very high price especially when there are no assets.

What VC’s don’t tell you is that their money has got an expiry date too. VC’s are fronts for investors who pool their money and get larger stakes and eventually profits out of your business. The unreasonable profits they are looking at the end, has to feed an army of managers and investors. We have many new entrants like Sir Tony Fernandez and the likes who have launched their own VC’s funds. All this is to get access to great ideas and free labor. The number of high worth individuals who started their own private funding under the guise of nation building is questionable.

My advice to real entrepreneurs is to focus on your revenue.  Make sure your cashflow is tight and spend only when you need to. Giving too much too early will dissipate your entrepreneurship in no time. VC’s don't care about your business they way you do. They want returns any which way possible.

Happy Deepavali All. I don't know, will lead me to light.

It’s becoming very apparent that I don’t know anything about my world. How it works and why it can cause pain and pleasure? It’s totally surprising that how I could live on this earth without knowing anything about my surroundings. But, I do know something. I have gathered some knowledge about my world but in bits and pieces over the years. Like a huge puzzle, I am trying to piece it together.

I do know, that I would like the world to be in a certain way, for it to be joyful. I like my coffee milky, because it is a familiar taste that I have grown to enjoy. I have learnt that unsweetened coffee brings the real taste of coffee to the fore. Through trial and error, I have gathered knowledge that is slowly leading me to my present understanding of how to enjoy this world. As I pursue the attainment joyfulness, I am experimenting with life everyday. This expectation of joy that I have, is based on my past knowledge and experience that I have gathered over the years. I find myself, constantly testing and challenging these past experiences. My pursuit of happiness, for the elixir of life, has opened my eyes to enter a state of constant learning as to be the best approach to this world.

This is because that there is a way for me to enjoy this world if I understood it better. In order to enjoy this world, I have to abandon a few things. If I wanted to understand how the world works? That means at every instance, I have to be learning and not thinking of anything else. The learning can only be actuated when I am humble and free of ego. The mind has to be trained to stop thinking and just learn everything. The entire thought process has to be abandoned to allow the learning process to happen. This is in contrary to what I was traditionally taught. This is the challenge that I am contemplating this Deepavali. To get rid of my thoughts.

In pursuit of happiness, I would like to wish all my friends and family who will be reading this message a “Happy Deepavali” 2016. Thank you for being in my world. God bless.
